Dismissed policeman works in Lagos command for eight years

A former policeman, Adeh Ada, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly parading himself as a cop in the state, eight years after his dismissal.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ada, who was attached to the Mopol 11 in Calabar, Cross River State, was dismissed sometime in February 2009, for losing his firearm.

While awaiting his letter of dismissal, the suspect allegedly manoeuvred his way and got a transfer to the Area C Command of the Lagos State Police Command.

He was said to be going for illegal duties and extorting money from motorists, through which he allegedly survived for eight years.

A Divisional Police Officer, who observed the unethical conduct of the Benue State indigene, reportedly summoned and queried him.

A police source said Ada opened up that he had not been paid salary since 2009 when he was “transferred” to Lagos from Calabar.

“The DPO, who was alarmed, quickly wrote the state command’s Provost Marshal and he was transferred to the command headquarters for investigation. The police authorities wrote the Cross River State Police Command for information about him.
“That was when the signal came that he had been dismissed since 2009 when he lost his firearm. Investigations showed that he manoeuvred his way to Lagos and resumed at the command. How he was able to do that still remains a mystery,” he said.

Ada, a former inspector, told PUNCH Metro that he had spent eight years in the police force and had risen to become an inspector when he lost his firearm. He insisted that he was not dismissed.

He said,
“I was at a checkpoint sometime in 2009 with four other members of my team. A speeding vehicle suddenly hit me and my rifle got hooked to the bumper of the vehicle.
“One of my colleagues, Sergeant Gabriel, rode on a motorcycle and chased it. Afterwards, I also got a vehicle to chase the bus. I met Gabriel standing in front of Zone 6 command headquarters and he said he could not catch up with the bus. He advised me to continue the chase to White Market, Calabar. Unfortunately, I could not find the bus.”
He said he stood for an orderly room trial where he was recommended for dismissal, adding that he appealed the decision and asked that he be surcharged for the loss of the rifle.

He said he had yet to be served a letter of dismissal when “I demoted myself and came to Lagos.”

He said,
“The panel recommended dismissal for me, and I appealed it. In my appeal, I said I should be surcharged for the rifle, which is in line with the Police Act, Section 400, which says any police officer or rank and file that loses his firearms by negligence or other means can be surcharged.
“I demoted myself and came to Lagos in February 2009 with a letter which posted me to Area C. I have been working there since then. I put on my uniform and go to work every day.
“It was when I asked for my salary through my DPO that they sent a signal that I was dismissed in February 2009.”
Asked how he had been sustaining his family, the suspect, who said he relocated with his four children and wife to the Agege area of Lagos State, said he had been relying on “God and family members.”

The police had arraigned Ada before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court for impersonation and unlawful possession of police uniform.

No Nigerian killed in South Africa’s xenophobic attacks- Minister

No Nigerian died in the renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Khadijah Abba Ibrahim, told the Senate yesterday.
The minister based her statement on the information from the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa.

The minister said nobody was convicted as a result of previous attacks and no compensation was paid by the South African government.

The Chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, told the minister that Nigerians were interested in what the government was doing to protect them in South Africa.
“We want to hear from the ministry that the Acting High Commissioner has actually invited Nigerians to talk to them to give them solace because tomorrow, nobody knows what is going to happen again.
We are only telling them (Nigerians), to please hide to give a low profile. That means we have told them not to engage in their businesses again that they should be in hiding which is not good for Nigerians.
“To the committee we are not happy, we are highly disappointed and what we would expect is that your delegations, we have the mandate of the two Houses for us to go to South Africa. We will all go together see them and look at the memoranda of understanding or bilateral of what you are signing.
“It has to be give and take. If it is necessary Nigeria will not hesitate to put sanctions on South Africa.
After about one hour of deliberation, the Senate yesterday resolved to dispatch a “powerful” parliamentary delegation to South Africa to express the displeasure of the Nigerian parliament over the attacks.

15 wedding guests injured after hotel staircase collapsed as they posed for photos

“The couple had to call other guests who were due to arrive in the evening to cancel.
“They hope to rearrange as the happiest day of their lives turned into a nightmare.”

EFCC recovers more vehicles, others from ex-Customs boss

Barely six days after 17 “exotic” vehicles were recovered from a Kaduna warehouse belonging to former Comptroller-General of Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Abdullahi Dikko Inde, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), another set of items including vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles, have been seized.

The items, which were recovered on Monday and Tuesday from another warehouse said to be the property of the former Customs boss include a 2013 model 32-seater Nissan bus, 42 cargo tricycles, one tipper truck, 16 motorcycles, over 500 rug carpets and two fire-proof safes.

According to The Nation, Zonal Head, EFCC in Kaduna, Bappa Ibrahim said yesterday that the recovery was made following tip-off .
He said the operation, which led to the recovery of the items was a continuation of the anti-graft agency’s investigation on the former Customs boss.

Ibrahim said the items were recovered from a warehouse, off Nnamdi Azikwe Expressway, around NASFAT village in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The two safes, which were forced open by EFCC operatives in the presence of reporters, contained documents, an iron stamp, 50 and 20 naira notes, amounting to N1,560 and polythene bags.
The Zonal EFCC boss declined comments on the documents found inside the safes, saying further investigations would be carried out on them.

“The fresh operation, which started on Monday, 27th February, 2017 till today is a continuation of last week operation, which led to recovery of 17 exotic vehicles.”
He called on the public to always assist the anti-graft agency with information, as the war against corruption is everyone’s and should not be left for the EFCC alone.

I will never contest against Buhari-Tinubu slams reports f presidential ambition

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has slammed reports of wanting to run for president saying he will never stand in any contest against President Muhammadu Buhari or support anyone against him.
In a statement by his Media Office yesterday,Tinubu pledged his continued loyalty to the president and the APC ,debunking Thisday’s story published yesterday.

The statement titled:
“Response to Thisday false news report”said:
“The front page story of the February 28 Thisday newspaper alleging that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is actively planning a presidential run is an example of bad fiction masquerading as professional journalism.
“The story is a manufactured tale weaved by its authors to try to create division where there is none.
“Those who wrote this fantasy seek to place Asiwaju Tinubu at odds with President Buhari. Writing such a baseless report is a very foul and wrong thing to do.
“The story carried the headline ‘Tinubu Prepares for Presidential Run, Dumps PDP, Mega Party Alliance’. The headline is remarkable in the fact that every bit of it is utterly wrong.
“First, Asiwaju Tinubu is not gearing up for a presidential run. So there will not be any doubt about this core matter; we shall state Tinubu’s position clearly and unequivocally so that even Thisday reporters cannot misinterpret his position.
“As long as that patriotic and committed man named Muhammadu Buhari holds and seeks to hold the mantle as our president, then Asiwaju Tinubu stands behind him in unwavering support and confidence.
“Asiwaju Tinubu remains faithful to the mission of progressive reform and change that President Buhari, he and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have started.
“Tinubu was instrumental in the formation and success of the APC. His toil and efforts helped establish this government.  He is not one to tear down something he laboured so dutifully to build.
“Instead of trying to convey the truth, the THISDAY report opted to gain false sensation by completely mocking the tenor of the brief banter Asiwaju Tinubu had with journalists at the inauguration of Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. When asked about future political office, Asiwaju said he could not discount that possibility if the nation called upon him for such service, provided, he emphasised, that all political conditions were appropriate; particularly the office in question would have to be vacant, even if it’s local government chairmanship. In our political lexicon, this means the office is not held by a member of the APC in good standing.  We all know this.
“Moreover, if you really listen to his words, Asiwaju did not mention any office or any time-frame.  The conditions he mentioned may not become ripe for years to come and they might not pertain to the presidency. In effect, all Asiwaju said was the position that any political figure would hold.
“As a politician, he cannot preclude the possibility of running for office in the future because no man knows what the future will hold. To translate this general statement of political reality into a tale that he is actively preparing for a 2019 presidential run is reckless in the extreme.
“For that newspaper’s reporters to have engaged in this great leap of counterfeit logic means they purposefully bowed to the pressure to create false headlines instead of following the ethics of their craft to follow the truth even if the truth is more pedestrian and less volatile than what the reporters would have liked to hear. “They have turned themselves into newsmakers instead of remaining true to their calling of being neutral conveyors of events.
“Asiwaju Tinubu has not held any planning meetings for any such presidential campaign and is not contemplating any such meetings. He has no present list of possible running mates because he has no present intention of running.
“The headline also libels Asiwaju by asserting he was going to join the PDP.  This is as shameless as a lie can be. Asiwaju is acknowledged to be the intellectual father and the driving force behind the APC.
“It makes no sense that he would abandon the party that he worked hard to build in order to enter the dilapidated building the PDP has become. Asiwaju worked for over 16 years to break the PDP yoke on the nation.
“After breaking that yoke, it is not in his nature to voluntarily place it back on our necks. Anyone who has followed his career, even his staunchest critics, knows Asiwaju for his partisan consistency. He is not a party hopper. He is loyal and sticks with the party to which he belongs.
“After fighting for so many years to elevate his party to the position of national leadership, he would not give that away in order to join with those who blame him for their currently bleak political circumstance.
“We understand all too well the genesis of this false news report. For their own reasons, THISDAY has joined with those who seek to put Asiwaju Tinubu at odds with our President.
“This scam will fail. Asiwaju supports and stands behind   President Buhari. He wishes the president well and that he returns soon. Whether the president is here or away, he has the full loyalty of Asiwaju Tinubu.
“President Buhari can rest assured on this point: Asiwaju Tinubu will never contest against him nor will he support anyone who does.”

Man bags life imprisonment for raping ‘girlfriend’

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti on Monday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Tope Odeyemi, to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of rape.

Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye convicted him after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman and inflicting grievous bodily harm on her which led to her admission in a hospital.

According to Punch, the prosecution, led by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi, told the court that the father of two committed the offence on September 4, 2014 in Iyin Ekiti.

The prosecution called five witnesses to prove his case while the defence counsel, Mr. Taiwo Adeloye, called two witnesses.

The state counsel also urged the court to convict Odeyemi based on the evidence laid before the court.
