New Titanic Theory Suggests Jack Never Existed And Was Just Dreamt Up By Rose During Breakdown

Nearly 20 years after Titanic premiered, fans are still hotly debating whether Rose could have saved Jack at the end of the blockbuster film, but one person has boldly suggested that Leonardo DiCaprio's beloved character never actually existed in the first place.

A resurfaced Reddit fan theory proposes that Kate Winslet's character, Rose DeWitt Bukater, had a psychotic episode aboard the doomed ship and Jack was merely a figment of her imagination that helped her deal with the misery of her life.

To back up the wild explanation, the Redditor pointed out that Rose hated Cal, the man she was being forced to marry, and she was quite possibly depressed when she attempted to kill herself before being saved by the mysterious Jack Dawson.

Unlike her arrogant, possessive, and abusive fiancé Cal, played by Billy Zane, Jack is playful, creative, and is not at all motivated by material wealth.

The film's hero encourages her break free from society's expectations and live her life to the fullest, telling her: 'If you don't break free, you're going to die.'

According to the Reddit user, Jack represents Rose's inner strength, and it is his presence that allows her to 'fly' at the ship's bow in the film's most iconic scene.

Finally, the theorist argues that the film's modern-day treasure hunters told 101-year-old Rose they couldn't find any trace of a Jack Dawson on the ship.

'No, there wouldn't be, would there?' Rose says at the end of the film. 'He exists now only in my memory.'

A video laying out the Redditor's theory was posted by the AllTime Movies Facebook page in October 2016 and recently resurfaced on BuzzFeed

In the past seven months, the clip has been viewed more than 31 million times and created quite a controversy as commenters slammed the theory, arguing there was no record of Jack simply because he won his ticket on board while gambling.

Fans are still passionate about the fate of the film's characters two decades after it premiere, and one argument that won't die is whether or not they both could have been saved.

The 1997 disaster film focuses on Jack and Rose's torrid romance, which is abruptly interrupted when the luxury ship begins to sink after hitting an iceberg in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

The story tragically ends with Leo's character sacrificing his life to spare the love of his life from freezing death, but many fans of the film have been quick to point out that with a little ingenuity both lovers could have fit on the floating door that ultimately saved Rose from freezing to death.

And last year, Kate Winslet finally admitted on Jimmy Kimmel Live that she also believes Jack could have been saved after he accused her of letting her boyfriend die.

'I agree,' she told Kimmel. 'I think he could have actually fitted on that bit of door.'

There was even an episode of the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters that described a variety of ways Jack could have survived.

However, director James Cameron recently slammed the show's findings after joining the team of scientists to test their theories, insisting there was no way Jack could have been saved.

'OK, so let’s really play that out: you’re Jack, you’re in water that’s 28 degrees, your brain is starting to get hypothermia,' he told The Daily Beast in January.

'Mythbusters asks you to now go take off your life vest, take hers off, swim underneath this thing, attach it in some way that it won’t just wash out two minutes later'

James continued: '[That] means you’re underwater tying this thing on in 28-degree water, and that’s going to take you five to ten minutes, so by the time you come back up you’re already dead.
