The schoolgirl was found with severe and large cuts to her neck and chest on a playing field in York - before the teenager was arrested and charged with murder.
The teenager pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to manslaughter by diminished responsibility but not guilty to murder over the killing in in January, which was accepted by prosecutors.
The prosecution also referred to the defendant's delusional beliefs - among which was the thought the other people were 'robots' and 'not real'.
And 48 hours before killing Katie she posted a picture to Instagram of self-harm wounds to her arms with the caption: 'Mentally, seriously, not okay.'
Police were called to Alness Drive in the Woodthorpe area of York on January 9 at about 4.30pm and found the fatally wounded girl lying near a football pitch.
She was rushed to York Hospital with significant lacerations to her neck and chest but despite doctors' best efforts they were unable to save her.
The dark-haired defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared via video link at Leeds Crown Court this morning wearing a black hooded top.
Flanked by a solicitor, she covered her mouth with her hand and looked at the floor as she entered her plea.
She appeared on the video link sat next to a solicitor and wearing a black hoodie. Her solicitor confirmed her name when asked by the judge, Mr Justice Soole.
Nicholas Johnson QC, defending, asked the court if the charge of murder could be put to the girl again and she wrote her plea on a piece of paper.
Her solicitor told the court: 'I can confirm she has indicated not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter.'
Graham Reads QC, prosecuting, said: 'We are going to accept the plea of manslaughter by means of diminished responsibility.
