The domestic abuse trial against Lanre Gentry, the husband of Mercy Aigbe, before an Ikeja chief magistrate court in Lagos has been adjourned because the actress showed up very late.
According to The Nation, the actress was expected to submit her medical report to the court, but when the court clerk called the case at around 11.05 am yesterday, the couple were nowhere to be found.
The matter again was called up at 11.25 am, and only Lanre Gentry was present with his counsel, and they were accompanied to the chamber of Folakemi Davies-Abegunde, the chief magistrate.
According to news reports, Gentry and his counsel left the court premises 20 minutes later. Not long after, Aigbe arrived the court with her counsel Uche Ani. The duo proceeded to the magistrate’s chamber, where they were duly informed that the case has been adjourned till June 28.
This surprising turn comes after the actress reportedly filed a restraining order against Lanre Gentry, asking that he should not come within a mile radius of her and their two children.
Recall that in her interview with Broadway Africa, the actress said she was still afraid of Lanre Gentry and wants him to assure her that he would never attack her again.
She said:
“I am fighting for my life because if I die there would be no image to protect. I just want him to sign an undertaking that nothing would happen to me because a man who is capable of sending thugs to the house is capable of anything. Someone who can set me up and lie that I have mental illness can do anything. He should sign the undertaking and we should go our different ways. If not, I would leave the case to the appropriate agency and the law would take its full course.”
Yesterday’s hearing was her opportunity to show reason why the court would honour her request for a restraining order, but the actress was late.
Hopefully, she won’t be late on June 28, the date of the next hearing.
